Student Emergency Aid Fund

Help Support a Student in Crisis

Update: The Student Emergency Aid program has been fully funded! Any additional funds raised over the $2,500 goal will still go directly toward helping students in an unforeseen crisis.

The Community of Care at Loyola Marymount University, working in conjunction with faculty, staff and other students, provides prevention, assessment and intervention for and with students as they navigate the challenges that stand in their way of academic and personal success. LMU provides comprehensive financial aid packages, scholarships and work-study opportunities, but sometimes unforeseen hardships and emergencies make it difficult for students to meet their school-related financial obligations and deal with unexpected, legitimate challenges. Situations like these happen every year, and in the past the Community of Care has struggled to provide additional financial assistance so students can meaningfully manage the crisis and stay on track with their academic goals.

The purpose of the LMU Student Emergency Aid Fund is to provide assistance to students in the event of an emergency. An emergency is defined as circumstances that stand in the way of a student’s ability to meet basic needs and requires immediate attention. The LMU Student Emergency Aid Fund is designed to help students cope with personal and unforeseen obstacles by providing one-time stipends. While it is impossible to provide an exhaustive list, examples of where the stipend could be used may include funds to travel home in the event of an ill or deceased parent or grandparent, medical costs from a serious medical incident, recover loss from theft or fire, or to cover basic living expenses.

“As the dean of students at Loyola Marymount University, my overarching commitment is to help every student be successful academically,” said Dr. Jeanne Ortiz. “The students I see are hard-working, creative, ambitious and committed to the values that are inherent in the LMU experience. At the same time, I meet with students who are facing obstacles and challenges that could easily derail an otherwise successful college career.”

When you contribute to the LMU Student Emergency Fund, please be assured that each request received by the dean of students is reviewed thoroughly by an aid committee. This is an opportunity for you to help a student stay focused on their academic goals despite their sudden hardships.
